For beautiful, kissable lips, use natural products, detox, and take your daily multi.
Is there anyone who doesn't have chapped lips this time of year? Or even worse—dry, cracked lips that hurt and bleed!
The trouble is, what you put on your lips—even simple lip balm—may not help. All too many ingredients in lip products are actually hazardous to your health.
A high-tech (laser-induced spectroscopy) analysis recently applied to four different lipstick brands showed levels of cadmium and lead—toxic heavy metals—that were much higher than permissible safe limits for human health. Not only can these… Continue reading Edge on Health Blog

What Your Skin Says About Overall Health.
The largest organ in the body, your skin works hard to protect the rest of you from environmental toxins and unwanted pathogens. In fact, your body sheds approximately one-third of its impurities through the skin.
When the liver is on overload, toxins find their way through your skin and radically affect its clarity and elasticity. Wrinkles, blotchy patches, and blemishes appear. Your complexion may start to look sallow, grayish, or discolored—fairly quickly.
New cells are created at the lowest, or basal, layer of skin and gradually force their… Continue reading

Healthy Weight Before 50 Spells Survival for Women.
Want to live a long and healthy life? Increasingly, research points to healthy weight—or healthy weight loss—between the ages 20 and 50.
Fat loss, particularly fat around the waistline, helps prevent cancer, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, depression, and other devastating kinds of chronic disease including Parkinson's, MS, and Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS). Because women tend to live longer, they're more likely to suffer chronic disease or mental health problems. That's no way to enjoy longevity!
"The best way to maximize the probability of healthy survival… Continue reading

Your sunscreen may be to blame!
If your skin is starting to feel like the Sahara, you're not alone. Even if you've been slathering on sunscreen all summer, the sun is hard on the complexion.
Part of the problem is what's in sunscreen. A new report from Friends of the Earth questions the safety of manufactured nanoparticles—a popular, new way to deliver cosmetic ingredients—in sun protection products.
That's because sun protective ingredients work differently as tiny nanoparticles than they do in their usual "bulk" form. Even the "gold standards" of sun protection—titanium dioxide and zinc oxide—don't… Continue reading

Benefits Go Far Beyond Weight Loss.
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is back in the news. And for good reason!
This "good" omega-6 fat lowers body mass index (BMI) and overall body fat after 8 weeks in obese postmenopausal women with Type 2 diabetes. Earlier Norwegian research showed a stunning 20 percent decrease in the ratio of body fat to lean tissue. Overweight individuals also lost an average of 7 pounds—without making any changes in their diets.
A hefty body of research suggests that CLA does far more than stimulate weight loss. Combined with vitamin E, conjugated linoleic acid may be useful in lowering… Continue reading
Does your Diet Agree With Your Meds?
March 9th, 2009
So many individuals are on meds these days that I thought it wise to give you a "heads up" on your meds and nutrient interactions.
1) When you take antibiotics for long or short term, always include a daily dose of probiotics. Probiotics (like Flora Key or Dr. O's) should be taken two hours before or two hours after antibiotics. Also, many antibiotics should not be taken with dairy products because calcium can lessen their effectiveness. My recommendation is to dole out the dairy (including any whey protein powder drink) at least two hours before or two hour after your intake… Continue reading

Good Day Boys and Girls:
I would be remiss if I didn't let you know that I am thinking of you with a thankful heart on this Thanksgiving week :)
Now, many of you will have already seen the NY Times article on vitamins. Didn't catch it? Well, here it is :
http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/1...-for-vitamins/
I am sure you will have many comments, mine will be forthcoming shortly, but here is what a well known nutritional expert e-mailed me when I sent this off to my professional friends. These words echo my own sentiments and will give you a snapshot of the big… Continue reading

It's a chemical world. Even before birth and throughout their development, children are exposed to neuro-, immuno-, and endocrine-toxic compounds. As adults, exposure to hormone disrupters, heavy metals like lead and mercury, and countless toxic chemicals increase the risk for cancer and thyroid disease.
New Danish research finds that heavy metal and other pollution significantly increases the risk for brain, breast, and thyroid cancer—even in nurses who may be more careful about their health than other women.
University of Albany scientists specifically target hormone disrupters (heavy metal and…
