I’ve noticed enough thin spots on my scalp to make me nervous, but I’m hesitant to splurge on a special hair-growth vitamin. Can those pills really make a difference?

While most hair-growth supplements will help, thanks to their high amounts of hair-nourishing biotin, many of these pills are missing nutrient that’s even more effective: methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). This compound aids in the production of keratin (one of the main proteins in hair) and strengthens hair follicles. In one study, 100 percent of subjects who took MSM showed reduced hair loss and increased growth in just six weeks.

That’s why I suggest a two-pronged approach: Instead of a pricey specialty supplement, choose a multi that includes biotin. Then supplement with 1,000 mg of MSM. You should notice thicker locks within four to six weeks.
