Choose the right carbs to slim down and protect your health.
White bread and ice cream are much riskier foods for women than men, a new Italian study of close to 48,000 adults finds. At least one quarter of women eating high-glycemic carbs had double the risk for heart disease as those who ate the least fattening carbs in this investigation.
Research in a recent issue of JAMA links carbs from processed foods to lower levels of healthy HDL cholesterol and higher levels of the dangerous LDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Foods with added sugars—sucrose…

As antibiotic resistance grows, C. difficile is becoming more virulent.
A gram-positive bacteria, Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is the leading cause of diarrhea in hospitals, daycare centers, and nursing facilities—moving aggressively into the larger community much the way MRSA infections have. And many experts consider this new super bug even more deadly.
Between 1993 and 2001 C. difficile infections increased 74%. By 2005, the incidence had doubled!
Responsible today for 30% of antibiotic-associated diarrhea and 70% of antibiotic-associated colitis, C. difficile is more than simply unpleasant—it has increased mortality as well as healthcare costs in…

Tiny parasites can zap your energy—just when you want to enjoy spring.
Over 100 different parasites live in humans—and we are exposed to them daily. While children are most susceptible—and have more worms than adults—a third of Americans who submitted fecal samples for examination tested positive for "unwanted guests."
Spring downpours can cause manure and sewage runoff that contaminate water supplies. Imported produce and increased international travel also increase Americans' exposure to parasites. Plus it's all too easy to pick up home-grown parasites from our favorite pets.
Worms and protozoa can deliver a double whammy…

5 to 6 small meals a day can boost metabolism.
Sounds counterintuitive, doesn't it? But eating less actually puts the body in starvation mode, burning calories more slowly and making you feel hungry—thanks to our "thrifty metabolism."
Instead, studies show that eating small, nutritionally balanced, high-fiber (low-glycemic) meals throughout the day can trick the metabolism, balance blood sugar levels, and prevent cravings.
Research at the Cleveland Clinic finds that combining low-glycemic foods with exercise increased insulin sensitivity and lowered weight among obese adults. And Italian scientists report that a low-glycemic…

Prevent painful gallbladder problems naturally.
Over 25 million Americans have gallstones—if only 1 million get diagnosed annually. Sudden, sharp pain in the upper abdomen, under the breastbone, near the right shoulder, or between the shoulder blades usually signals gallstones, hardened cholesterol deposits ranging in size from a grain of sand to a golf ball.
A small, pear-shaped organ located right under the liver, the gallbladder releases an important digestive fluid called bile that contains cholesterol. But if cholesterol is too high or the gallbladder fails to empty correctly, bile and the substances it contains…

Seasonal detox flushes out hormone-disrupting toxins that make you fat.
Male fish producing eggs, beluga whales with both male and female organs, male frogs turning into females—this is scary stuff! And now scientists are discovering similar problems in humans.
"Testosterone levels are down 16% in men," researcher Theo Colburn, professor emeritus at the University of Florida in Gainesville, told NPR last week, "and sperm counts have dropped by half in the last 60 years." Environmental toxins in "practically everything we use" from herbicides, pesticides, PCBs, flame retardants, and plasticizers in food and water…

You can lose up to 20 pounds—safely—in just 2 weeks!
Want to curb your appetite? Need to boost metabolism so you can successfully lose weight this spring?
With 67% of Americans overweight or obese, most people need to shed some pounds. Even 18% of today's teens are overweight. But losing weight can be dangerous if not done right.
The good news is that high-fiber drinks—especially when you add nutrient-dense berries—help you do just that! New Finnish research reports that a diet rich in berries can reduce inflammatory markers for metabolic syndrome, resulting in belly fat…

Regular seasonal detox helps protect your heart and so much more.
Widely used in packaging, bisophenol A (also known as BPA) has been consistently associated with cardiovascular disease in American adults. More than 2.2 million metric tons of BPA are produced annually—in drink containers, food packaging, and the lining of canned goods.
Americans get additional exposure through dental sealants, drinking water, and inhalation of household dust. No wonder exposure to this toxic chemical is so pervasive!
Based on a new large-scale study of over 2,600 people with known BPA levels, researchers suggest that men in…

Sensitivity to grains is linked to depression, headaches, and indigestion.
Wheat intake can trigger two increasingly prevalent immune-related conditions—celiac disease and gluten sensitivity. New Israeli research finds that people with multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory muscle disorders have antibodies to gluten (a protein in barley, wheat, and other grains) suggesting sensitivity to this reactive substance.
At least 3 million Americans have celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disorder that causes the body to attack—and eventually destroy—the walls of the small intestine. In people with related symptoms (anemia, arthritis, depression, diarrhea, digestive discomfort, infertility, malabsorption, and…
