How to avoid bringing home surprising souvenirs.
Getting away for a much needed vacation is the highlight of many people’s summer, but unwittingly being exposed to toxic invaders can leave you with a ruined trip and a problem that follows you home. You’re not a party pooper if you take precautions—you’re a smart traveler. Check out some of these ways to safeguard your long-term health by avoiding pathogens away from home.
Don’t share your phone. A microbiologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson found that 50 percent of the cell phones he examined…

Say goodbye to cravings, bloating, and possible thyroid problems.
Yeast is definitely nobody's BFF. But it can be with us for life—which is why I was so happy to finally read
an article about yeast overgrowth on the front page of the Lifestyle section in the Spokesman Review. Yeast is finally getting the respect it deserves. And it’s about time because I believe nearly 50 million of us suffer from that subclinical fungus among us.
Yeast plays a very insidious role in weight gain—and can contribute to nearly 30 pounds of flab in some cases. Why? It's because yeast is…

Recent test results left me mystified.
For over ten years, I have been on the trail of heavy metal. And no, I'm not talking Led Zepplin, here! Twice a year, I test myself using a
Tissue Mineral Analysis to identify patterns of glandular health and emotional trends that can be assessed from mineral ratios (sodium to potassium correlates with adrenal function, calcium to potassium reveals thyroid efficiency, low sodium and high potassium is known as the fear formula, while calcium to magnesium is associated with blood sugar).
Imagine my surprise when I received my latest
TMA—which…

Drink your greens to fight off germs and detox.
Like many of you, I must admit that during this time of the year I simply don’t eat enough green veggies. Maybe it’s because during the winter months fresh produce spends days—if not weeks—in shipping or simply sitting at the grocery store losing nutrients. What I have seen in the supermarket just doesn’t look all that appealing.
So, to help get those greens and ward off wintertime chills, colds, and flu at the same time, I try to drink my greens!
I can't think of a…

Detox for a slim figure that lasts.
It's a toxic world out there. Every day, our bodies are assaulted by pathogens and poisons—which are making us fat!
One theory about why chemicals induce weight gain has to do with the way many of them mimic the effects of estrogen in our bodies. That's why this group of toxins has come to be known as "false estrogens" or xenoestrogens.
These poisonous infiltrators, whose use skyrocketed since World War II, find various ways of inducing, blocking, or otherwise scrambling our hormonal signals, either because they have deliberately…

Here's how to clean up your act—inside and out.
While Americans take pride in their high standard of hygiene, in many unsuspecting ways our homes are actually filthy.
Super bugs like staph are lurking where you would least expect them. Before you draw yourself a nice, hot bath to wash off unwanted pathogens, consider this—the bathtub is, ironically, the dirtiest of all places in most homes.
To be fair, nearly 90% of all surfaces recently tested in American homes were actually squeaky clean, but the remaining contaminated surfaces are enough to make anyone really…

No longer a summertime nuisance, insects can spread dangerous infections.
Mosquitoes are more than just something to swat. Every year, over a million people die from mosquito-borne disease—including Dengue fever, EEE, and West Nile virus.
Equally troubling, up to 80% of neuoroinvasive West Nile infections produce no symptoms, shows a recent study by the CDC. And even people successfully treated for West Nile report depression and fatigue a year to 18 months after infection.
Global climate change and increased international travel has increased the spread of infectious insects, which thrive in warmer climes. Not…

Whether you're wilderness backpacking or planning a day trip with the kids, prevent potential health problems before they begin.
This should be the season to relax in a hammock, get away from it all in the great north woods, or cool off in a crystal clear mountain lake. But as idyllic as all that sounds, dangers lurk in even the most innocent summer outings.
What could be safer than bird watching? Actually, those feathered friends carry the same Lyme disease ticks that deer do, recent Canadian research finds. And swimming in a tranquil lake…

Only a half-inch long, pinworms are a big parasite problem.
It's hard to believe, but over 40 million Americans experience pinworm infections, or enterobiasis, in any given year. Unless the parasitic infestation is particularly heavy, though, most people will not recognize its symptoms.
The most noticeable—and probably the least likely to be discussed—sign of these tiny parasites is rectal itching, especially at night when female worms deposit their eggs. According to the Centers for Disease Control, pinworm eggs become infective within just a few hours.
Because these parasites can survive for 2 to 3…

As potentially disabling as a heart attack, tick bites are preventable.
A bacterial infection caused by tiny tick bites, Lyme disease is increasingly common in the northern hemisphere. And a mild winter in some parts of the country can explain documented cases even in January and February.
Children and young adults are most at risk for Lyme disease. While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recognizes 3 infectious strains from the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, some experts believe there may be as many as 300. And you don't need to develop the "signature" bull's eye…
