Snooze safely and slim down.
I just opened my February Allure;
The piece on "Sleeping and Dieting" really caught my attention, especially because of the headline from the Annals of Internal Medicine. It read, "55% less body fat was lost by dieters who slept 5.5 hours per night versus 9.5 hours." This means that even if you are dieting, increased body fat is sill associated with sleep deprivation.
It’s incredible that as many as 32 million Americans are sleepless—and not just in Seattle, anymore. But why, I wonder? Is it just the usual suspects: medication side effects, anxiety, circadian rhythm disorders, or even sleep apnea that…

The ancient seed that outperforms modern-day superfoods.
The Aztecs, Mayans, and Native Americans all shared a "secret food of the gods." It was the tiny chia seed—a real superfood by today's standards. In terms of antioxidant value, this super seed packs more of a nutritional punch than acai, pomegranate, artichoke, or blueberries. No wonder the fearless Aztecs could subsist on just a couple of handfuls during their mile long treks as they conquered Central America!
Energize, Halt Hunger, and Get Moving with Chia
Today, there's a lot more we know about this legendary super seed. For one thing, it is a complete source of vegetarian protein providing all the necessary amino acids to fuel…

Just make sure lean protein is king.
According to conventional nutritional wisdom, "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper." This was deemed especially good advice for those with weight to lose.
Imagine my shock when I read the latest study in Nutrition Journal trying to disprove this time-honored advice.
Following close to 400 people and what they reported eating at each meal, researchers discovered that those who ate a big breakfast consumed, on average, 400 more calories a day than the rest of the study volunteers.
Dr. Volker Schustziarra, a nutritional specialist in Munich…

Drink your greens to fight off germs and detox.
Like many of you, I must admit that during this time of the year I simply don’t eat enough green veggies. Maybe it’s because during the winter months fresh produce spends days—if not weeks—in shipping or simply sitting at the grocery store losing nutrients. What I have seen in the supermarket just doesn’t look all that appealing.
So, to help get those greens and ward off wintertime chills, colds, and flu at the same time, I try to drink my greens!
I can't think of a…

Love your lymph—to shed fat and cellulite.
You may have heard me say it before—there should be no diet without detox. Now new research in the journal Nature proves what I've been saying for decades—weight loss by itself can release a flood of environmental toxins into your bloodstream.
Researchers found the highest concentrations of the seven different pollutants they measured in study volunteers who lost weight. While weight loss is recommended to combat cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes, these same conditions are also linked to pollutants. No wonder Fat Flush has restored…

Lighten up.
Seasonal Affective Disorder—starting in late fall with light deprivation—and subsiding with the longer, sunnier days of spring, is becoming an increasingly frequent type of depression reported by many of my clients—especially those between 15 and 55 years of age. Up to 20% of Americans experience depression during the winter months—called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). And that's too bad, because the fix is so simple!
Did you Know?
Symptoms are similar to other forms of depression: lethargy, fatigue, decreased energy, lowered sex drive, avoidance of social activities, sadness, concentration problems, and irritability. SAD can make…

Downsize your genes for those jeans.
"I had to buy new jeans again yesterday and two new belts to keep my pants up. I started Fat Flush wearing a size 12 pants—I just bought size 2," says one avid Fat Flusher from
annlouiseforum.com.
"I'm officially down 28 pounds, 5 clothing sizes, have run a marathon, am able to bench press my own weight, and am much, much healthier. I'm still hoping for the last 8 lbs, but I'm so pleased with the progress I think anything is reachable. I'm also pleased to…

Recharge your body and your brain.
"Mother of All Hormones?" Yes, you read that right, and we're not talking DHEA here.
Without this "mother" hormone your body couldn't produce other hormones like estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, or dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), for that matter. The hormone—that nobody is really talking about—has really powerful effects on aging, memory, mood, sexuality, and even sleep. It is the critical building block in the production of all other hormones that you have heard me writing, talking, or blogging about these days.
In fact, this uber hormone may be the ultimate raw material in your entire body. It's so…

A rise in rare tumors parallels greater mobile phone use.
The debate over cell phone use just took a dramatic turn. Researchers at Hebrew University in Jerusalem have found that cases of cancerous or benign parotid gland tumors—the parotid (or salivary) gland being the gland located closest to where people hold their phones—have quadrupled since 1970. The greatest rise was since 2001, just when cell phone use skyrocketed in Israel.
This evidence flies in the face of arguments that there has been no increase in tumors since cell phones became popular. And a new…
