Not All in Your Head, Dangers Lurking in Your Mouth

Microorganisms lodged in your mouth can impact virtually every part of your body. Even with a pearly white smile and pink, healthy-looking gums, you may still have a massive infection under a crown or in an empty space where a tooth was pulled. I know this all too well from personal experience.

Because your mouth is literally the gateway to your entire digestive system, it’s not surprising that oral health and overall health are closely linked. Recent research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention finds that arthritis, diabetes, heart disease, emphysema, hepatitis C, obesity, and stroke are all linked to gum and dental problems.

Since more than 15% of people in western industrialized countries have periodontal disease, that doesn’t bode well for long-term health. And many of dentistry’s responses to oral health problems only make things worse.

“How many people know the consequences of housing the 40 anaerobic bacteria in implants, the 60 in root canals, or the 8 in cavitations (holes in the jawbone from pulled teeth,” says biological dentist extraordinaire Hal Huggins, DDS. He believes that root canals alone—of which there may be 50 million a year—are related to breast cancer, leukemia, and MS.

A Different Take on Teeth
That’s not all. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), each tooth corresponds to different organs in the body in an integrative mind-body system. For instance, your front teeth (called central incisors) relate to the bladder and kidneys. Canine or eye teeth correspond to the liver and gallbladder.

As the chart in Fat Flush For Life, The Year-Round Super Detox Plan to Boost Your Metabolism and Keep the Weight Off shows, the teeth-organ meridians in TCM impact the autonomic nervous system as well as emotions. Because the Chinese believe that each season of the year activates certain organs, Fat Flush for Life taps into nature’s harmonious cycles, modifying detox protocols for optimal wellness.

In winter when the adrenals and kidneys need extra tender loving care, I’ve designed a detox plan using warming foods (like Spiced Lemon Toddy) to support your body’s special needs this time of year. Seasonal detox is just one way to eliminate toxins that zap overall wellness. It’s also important to clean up and detoxify the “hidden” microbes in your mouth.

Oil Pulling Kills Bacteria
An Ayurvedic technique recently found effective in a 2007 study from the Journal of Oral Health and Community Dentistry, oil pulling utilizes dietary oils from Winter Fat Flush (coconut or sesame oil) to pull bacteria, mucus, and toxins out of the mouth. “When you put oil in your mouth, the fatty membranes of the microorganisms are attracted to it,” says Bruce Fife, ND.

As you swish the oil around your teeth and gums, microbes are pulled out as though they are being drawn to a powerful magnet. “Bacteria hiding under crevices in the gums and in pores and tubules within the teeth are sucked out of their hiding places,” he adds, with dangerous microbes held firmly in the oil.

“The longer you push and pull the oil through your mouth, the more microbes are pulled free,” Dr. Fife explains. Aim for 20 minutes, then spit out this oil-pulling solution to get rid of bacteria, viruses, and other organisms. If you need to spit out intermittently, make sure you put more oil back in your mouth to continue this process. Spit it all out, and then rinse with a large glass of water to remove any residues.

Effective against the germs that cause plaque (killing up to 30%) and a simple and effective way to treat gingivitis (reducing gum disease between 52 and 60%), oil pulling beats out mouthwash, which cuts gingivitis only 13% and plaque up to 26%. While I don’t advise giving up brushing your teeth, oil pulling eliminates more bacteria than that does, too!

As Fat Flush for Life shows, even gentle winter detox can help lower your body burden of toxins. Many of these toxins contribute to weight gain. But without careful, seasonal cleansing, weight loss diets only release these environmental poisons from stored fat—putting them back in circulation where they can undermine your health.

Hi Louise – is it necessary to have the oil in your mouth for 20 min – i have tried but found that I just gagged and couldn’t keep it up for long. And how much oil should you be using when you do this? It did make my mouth feel fresher in the am on waking though.

    Hello Friends:
All of your questions are answered in my new book Fat Flush for LIfe. There is a whole section on oil pulling and when and how to do it, etc. etc. The book is available now, of course, on Amazon.

I was telling a friend about oil pulling and she said that she knew of people who had done it and had fillings and other dental work come out, because of the pulling action. She said it was only good to do if you had no dental work. Is that true?

I also read that as well about amalgam fillings etc. It mentioned that more mercury than normal could be released and pose a danger. Any thoughts on this Ann?
    Thanks.

After testing oil pulling for several months, the only side effects were a reduction in gum pockets, no more post nasal drips, and whiter teeth. I have never heard of anybody having their dental work disturbed or an increase in mercury release. I simply cannot imagine that. Oil pulling is not really pulling in that sense. One of the gals working at UNI KEY reported that her dentist couldn’t beleive how much her pockets had shrunk in just one month.

re oil pulling: i recently had gum surgury done to remove gum tissue to expose bone in order for a cap to adhere to. while this is healing do u think its not a good time to do the oil pulling? or would this perhaps help the tissue heal faster. i would hate to start the oil pulling after a crown is done.then the gums shrink and crown falls off?
too complicated? how do i find the answer- thank u . have the fast track book

I started doing this daily 3 weeks ago and I can really tell a difference in how my teeth feel and look. At first I thought it would be gross to hold the oil in my mouth for that long. But you swish it around the whole time and I chose a time when I’d be busy folding clothes, rounding up and taking the garbage out, things like that.. the 20 minutes went by quickly. Also, after you spit it out, swish a glass of hot water, mouthful at a time, to remove all the toxins that the oil pulls out.

My dentist and I see each other socially and I happened to talk to him for a bit about a week ago and told him I’d been doing this. He said it was fine and wouldn’t hurt the fillings I have. I can tell you this; when I did it the first couple times, the oil emulsified with my saliva and I spit out a kinda gross light green liquid. I use organic sesame oil and it is very light gold going in, so I believe it really does remove toxins trapped in my mouth. I told him about the green color and he said, yes, it’s working then.

I can tell my teeth and gums feel stronger and my breath is always fresh, even when I haven’t brushed for awhile. I did start using natural toothpaste last year with coenzyme Q10 and my dentist said that was very good toothpaste to use, he also said it was good to take a coQ10 supplement for good dental health.

I recently had dental mapping done in my mouth(non invasive EAVVoll Machine). It showed dozens of chemicals, pesticides, bacteria, viruses and parasites in my mouth. All these toxins were underneath previously pulled teeth and in the jaw. I have been sick for years with Lyme disease and all the related problems (including environmental illness)that come with it. I have to decide which treatment will be best because I am sensitive to just about everything. I am just starting on OP and I will continue and hope it will do the job.

Judy, I am glad that you are having great results with oil pulling. Are any of your fillings amalgam? I would like to do oil pulling but I have large amalgam fillings since childhood on my Molars and was wondering whethet it is safe to do Oil pulling as they contain mercury. I am hoping that it does not loosen the fillings and increase mercury vapours. Please lt me know, maybe your dentist friend may know. Thanks

I have done OP for years, my husband does it, its great, whitest teeth ever, must do on an empty stomach, dont take any meds or vitamins before cause it might pull the nutrients. It takes 20 minutes for your blood to circulate thru your body, hence the 20 minute requirement. I feel my sinus’ drain as I pull and its just great, I rinse with peroxide once afterwards and then brush with baking soda and natural toothpaste. Its a must do. Cant hurt at all.

One more thing: I also received Vitamin C infusions by IV. These can be time consuming and costly so buying plain ascorbic powder (some companies call them crystals) add half as much baking soda, let it fizz then . The best kind besides lyposomal C and IV C… So for 5000 mgs of C take one teaspoon Vitamin C powder add one half teaspoon baking soda add about one half cup of water, stir wait for fizzing to stop, then drink. This alkalizes the C so that it’s easier on the stomach.
