Avoid “Band Aid” Treatments.
Feeling angry or irritable, having trouble sleeping, worried about your job? It may just be the economy.
Nearly half of the almost 1,800 adults recently polled by the American Psychological Association admit they’re more stressed out now than they were a year ago. And 20-somethings—recent grads caught in a sinking economy and job market meltdown—are experiencing a double dose of anxiety, dependent upon their families while trying to strike out on their own.
Plus, more and more of us are seeking treatment for depression, finds a new study in the Archives of General Psychiatry. The rate of antidepressant use among Americans—six years and older—has almost doubled in the last decade. But there’s often a mismatch between those who take drugs and those who need treatment.
“It’s not just that people don’t get treated,” Philip Wang, MD, PhD, deputy director of the National Institute of Medical Health told the Los Angeles Times. “When you look at what they’re getting, most of the treatments are of low quality, or there’s not evidence that they’re effective.”
It’s typical for someone who’s depressed to cycle through a half dozen antidepressant drugs. A 2008 review of a dozen antidepressants, mostly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like Prozac and Zoloft, finds no substantial differences between how well they work.
Doctors usually start off prescribing SSRIs because they’re less dangerous and their side effects (impaired sexual function, nausea, and weight gain) are considered less serious than other medications. For example, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors (like Nardil and Parnate) can interact dangerously with other meds, and tricyclic antidepressants (like Pamelor) can raise heart rate and cause dizziness.
Affecting one in six Americans at some point in our lives, depression is a serious condition that deserves effective treatment.
Dr. Ann Louise’s Take:
The majority of antidepressant meds offer what I call the “band aid” effect: quick-fix treatments that don’t solve the problem or provide long-term benefits. These antidepressants don’t focus on correcting your body’s chemical imbalances—at least not without making you dependent on the drug. Whether your depression is related to the recession or rooted in more deep-seated emotional or physical causes, there are natural antidepressants that really work. One such product is based upon the legendary procaine-based GH3 from Romania discovered by Ana Aslan, MD at the National Geriatric Institute in Bucharest. Dr. Aslan was working with procaine, a common local anesthetic, when she observed powerful anti-aging and regenerative effects at the cellular level. She noted a dramatic improvement in depression, arthritis, hypertension, and angina among her elderly patients.
Eventually, an American biochemist transformed procaine so that it could break down into its principal metabolites, known as para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and diethylaminoethanol (DEAE). These natural ingredients provide the rejuvenating benefits to the brain and body. Procaine itself acts as an MAO balancer.
More than 300 clinical studies corroborate its antidepressant potential. In addition, William Zung, MD, professor of psychiatry at Duke University, found that GH-3 not only outperformed placebos but was also superior to imipramine, a popular tricyclic antidepressant. In Dr. Zung’s research, patients receiving GH-3 showed significant improvement in their mental well-being.
Based on a patented process that extends the procaine in the blood stream to six times more than the original formula, Uni Key Health’s Ultra H-3 has helped a myriad of individuals over the past ten years. Many report coping with stress better after the first two weeks of use and continue to maintain a constant feeling of well-being. Many have used Ultra H-3 to cut down or wean themselves off of their antidepressants with their doctors’ blessings. But don’t take it from me, see what people of all ages and stages have said about this fascinating product (testimonials).
